The Sheffield four-piece make an orchestral and grandiose noise, but their stately melodies derive from an inherent understanding of balance. Songs inflate with fragility and strength, the light and shade of their intricate arrangements effortless to the ear. Carrying the raw, unwavering spirit and vigour of live performance, their debut collection is comprised almost entirely of first takes. Due to this, it retains an honesty beyond its lyrical content to conjure a lived-in ambiance that is both homely yet unsettling; a haunted falsetto quivering on a knife-edge, warm guitar blends building to a storm of reverb and the unrelenting roll of drums. Each component recognisable yet bent slightly out of focus.
