When whiskey spends its entire maturation in aged rum or red wine barrels it is prized, savoured and treasured on the shelf. The songs in this collection are old songs. While they were being written in the casks of years gone by, the ideas were old. However, there was a need to leave them to mature. Airtight. Before connecting them to, and contaminating them with, the present. Obscuring the ability to differentiate between past and present – and inevitably the two intertwine – the record was born out of tracks that only previously existed as occasional fleeting moments in a live set. As ever, the central ingredients of acoustic guitar and voice make up the smoky, sweet vanilla of I Am Oak yet there remains the ever present, earthy connection to nature.
